Understanding Addu’s geography
Gan, Feydhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo, Maradhoo and Hithadhoo are linked by road, creating an unusually broad landscape for a Maldives holiday. Hulhumeedhoo lies across the lagoon and includes the communities of Meedhoo and Hulhudhoo. This geography makes cycling, driving and genuine island exploration possible alongside boat days.
Arriving through Gan
Gan International Airport is the southern gateway. Domestic connections from the Malé area and selected international services vary by schedule. From Gan, the connected western islands are reached by air-conditioned road transfer; Meedhoo requires a lagoon crossing, with the exact boat and terminal planned around the arrival.
History, nature and local life
Koagannu in Meedhoo, British wartime heritage, Hithadhoo’s wetlands and the linked-island roads give Addu a character far beyond a single beach. A good itinerary leaves time for conversations, cafés and cycling rather than treating every hour as an excursion. Local guidance adds context that a photo stop cannot.
How long to stay
Four nights introduces Addu; seven or more allows a better mix of lagoon, heritage, diving and slow island time. Divers and travellers combining Meedhoo with Canareef may stay longer.
