January to April
These months are generally associated with drier conditions, high demand and strong beach weather. Book early for popular resorts, water villas and school-holiday dates.
May to October
Expect more variable weather, short tropical showers and attractive offers. The ocean remains warm; divers and surfers may actively prefer particular seasonal conditions.
November and December
A transition toward the drier season brings appealing conditions, but festive dates command premium rates. Ask for a total price including compulsory dinners, transfers and taxes.
A month-by-month decision shortcut
January through March generally attracts travellers prioritising sunshine and calmer holiday planning. April is often hot and can bridge the seasonal change. May through October tends to bring more changeable skies, occasional strong showers and attractive resort offers. November is transitional, while December combines improving conditions with expensive festive dates.
Rain rarely follows a neat timetable
A wet-season forecast does not mean continuous rain, and a dry-season booking cannot promise cloudless days. Tropical showers can be intense and localised, with very different conditions between atolls. Choose a property with comfortable indoor space, flexible activities and a good house reef if a less predictable month appeals.
Marine life, diving and surfing
Seasonality affects currents, visibility and where plankton gathers, so the best month depends on the wildlife or water sport you value. Divers should ask a local operator about the relevant atoll rather than applying a single nationwide rule. Surfers should match the island and break to their experience, not simply book any Maldives resort in surf season.
When to book
For Christmas, New Year, Easter and school holidays, secure the preferred room category and transfer early. In quieter months, offers may improve, but flights and the most distinctive villas can still sell out. Always compare the complete cost: taxes, transfers, compulsory dinners and meal-plan upgrades can outweigh an attractive nightly rate.
