You gain uninterrupted lagoon views, a private deck and the experience of sleeping above the sea. Sunset orientation and a private pool can add value, though they often carry a substantial supplement.
Questions to ask
Can you swim safely from the deck? Is the villa on the sunrise or sunset side? How far is it from restaurants? Are children permitted? Ask about tides, currents and maintenance noise.
Consider a villa split

Water villa versus beach villa
A water villa offers an open horizon and a deck above the lagoon. A beach villa can provide more shade, softer access to the sea and a stronger sense of tropical vegetation. Families may find beach accommodation easier, while couples often value the privacy and theatre of an overwater stay.
Sunrise, sunset and lagoon position
Orientation affects afternoon heat, wind and the view—not just the sunset photograph. Villas facing an inner lagoon may have calmer swimming; outer positions may feel more private or dramatic. Ask for a map and understand that the exact villa number is rarely guaranteed unless the resort confirms it.
Safety and accessibility
Steps into the sea can become slippery, currents and depths change, and long jetties may be tiring in midday heat. Resorts apply different minimum ages and child-waiver policies. Travellers with limited mobility should ask about buggy service, step-free access and distance to restaurants before choosing an overwater category.
When the premium is worth paying
Choose it when time on the private deck is central to the holiday. If most days will be spent diving or exploring, two or three overwater nights may be enough. Compare a classic water villa with pool categories carefully: a private pool is valuable only if you will use it and the deck still has the outlook you expect.
